Q & A: Taking care of growing hair

Your questions answered

Q: I’m trying to grow my hair, do I need to have it cut and if so, how often?

A: Often when people are trying to grow their hair they will simply let it grow thinking it will take care of itself. The truth is, growing hair needs managing to keep it healthy, you need to have around ½ an inch cut off every 8-10 weeks or 10-12 depending on hair length or type. The reason we do this is to take off any split ends, as they can prevent your hair from growing. If not removed, split ends will continue to split up the hair shaft, which means taking off a lot more hair. We don’t want to get scissor happy – we’d much rather you had properly managed healthy hair.

Q: How can I keep my hair looking healthy when I’m trying to grow it?

A: As well as having a regular cut, to keep those split ends under control, we recommend that you don’t over heat it. Try not to use too much heat on your hair. Heat styling with straighteners or a hairdryer or curling wand can break the hair strands you’re working so hard to grow. This is not to say you can’t use them but they are best left for a special occasion – and don’t forget your to use heat protector!

Don’t think you have to wash it all the time because it is getting longer. It’s OK to skip a wash as your hair needs its natural oils. Try using a dry shampoo between washes.

Another good tip is to use cooler water when washing hair as hot water can dry your hair out and make it more brittle. It is important to keep your hair healthy during the growing process. To avoid having long but dehydrated hair, we highly recommend using a condition mask, which you can leave in for 10-20 mins once a week. This will keep your hair hydrated. We also recommend Olaplex which is a bond multiplier or any of the plex products on the market. The plex products help repair inside your hair.

Q: How long will it take my hair to grow?

A: It depends on your hair growth cycle. Each of us will have an average growth period of 3, 5 or 7 years to achieve our full length. Myself I’m on a 5 year cycle. My hair grows incredible quickly ( I was the freaky 3 year old with super long hair) and I can achieve very long hair up to 30 inches not because of my diet just because of my anagen phase (growth period). If you are 3-5 year cycle you can achieve up to 18-30 inches. If you are on a 7 year cycle you can achieve hair length as long as a 1 metre.
